Electoral Reform

The Federal Government made a commitment to change Canada’s Electoral System from the current “First-Past-The-Post System”, however it did not propose and alternative system. Rather it asked the House of Commons Special Committee on Electoral Reform,  to examine alternatives, reported back to Parliament.

The Committee submitted their report on December 1, 2016.

On September 6th I held a Democracy Town Hall in Atwood to hear from the people of Perth-Wellington on this important issue. My Autumn 2016 Newsletter included a section on electoral reform with a response section so all constituents would be given an opportunity to share their views, ideas and values.  On October 14, I submitted a report of my findings to the Committee: Submission to the Special Committee on Electoral Reform

On February 1, 2017 the Liberal Government announced they are abandoning their promise to change Canada’s Electoral System. On February 9 the House of Commons held a debate on this decision. You can view my speech from this debate on my video page.
